The Pastor for Christian Science churches is two books: The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy. Christian Science churches democratically select two lay members of the congregation to read aloud from our pastor. The Bible Lesson sermon, read on Sundays, is a compilation of texts from the Bible and Science and Health on a particular topic. Christian Scientists around the world study this same Bible Lesson throughout the week preceding the Sunday service. The weekly Bible Lesson is put together many months in advance by the Bible Lesson committee at The Mother Church in Boston and is published in The Christian Science Quarterly. Those who have been studying the Bible Lesson all week have the opportunity to support the sermon's healing message for the world as they listen on Sundays.

The Sunday service, including the sermon, hymns, and prayer, is untainted by personality, "uncontaminated and unfettered by human hypotheses," The Word of God shines through the Bible readings and the selections from Science and Health reflect a pure transparency of the spiritual sense of the Word.
